• When I Knew I Had an Important Job

I had met Kelly and Tom years previous when I worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia. They were a normal family, raising two girls. Although they worked hard, money was tight. Kelly was working as an assistant at an insurance company and Tom was working as a renovator for a large renovation company. They had worked with me for years but they were ready to buy their first home. It was not an easy mortgage, in fact, it took five days before we heard the verdict. Every day I had called Kelly and Tom to give them an update and tell them of no news yet. However, one Friday afternoon, someone else had answered the phone which not only touched me deeply but made me reflect on my career.

For many observers, I have been in the mortgage industry for 30 years. What most people don’t know is that I absolutely love what I do. In fact, given a choice, I would make the same decision to be a broker all over again.

What happened that Friday afternoon? The daughter of Kelly and Tom had answered the phone. At the time, she was about 10 years old. I asked for her parents and she told me that they were unavailable. Then she asked if I was “Mr. Banker”. I told her I was. She asked if they were getting the house. Whom am I to deny even this little girl the good news? Her response changed how I think about my position. She was jumping up and down with glee and said her parent’s happiness was lacking with nerves until the good news had arrived. I had not realized how much of an impact I had on people’s lives until that moment.

At Robert Floris’ Mortgage Architects office, it is this moment which changed my thinking of having a job versus having a career. Since that day, I ensure every client has honest advice to improve their financial lives. The feedback has been priceless. Currently, we have another broker, Sean Howard, who shares the same philosophy as I do. We are blessed. Since this life changing day, Kelly and Tom are doing better than ever in their country home and their daughters are now both grown up and happily married.
