A Reflection from One of Your Hamilton Mortgage Brokers

Despite today’s affordability challenges, Canada remains one of the best places in the world to build a future. Happy Canada Day from Robert Floris & Sean Howard.
Every day, we help families purchase homes, refinance mortgages, and build financial security. As Hamilton mortgage brokers, we spend a lot of time talking about interest rates, affordability, and the challenges Canadians face in today’s housing market.
Those conversations are important.
But every once in a while, it’s worth stepping back and remembering everything that still makes Canada an incredible place to live.
A Chance Encounter in Toronto
Yesterday morning, I was walking along College Avenue in Toronto around 8:30 a.m. The streets were surprisingly quiet for a city of that size.
As I continued walking, I noticed a long line of people stretching down the sidewalk. Many were carrying portable shopping carts.
Curious, I stopped to see what was happening.
A woman introduced herself and explained that the line was for a food bank. We spoke for about fifteen minutes.
She told me she had started the organization more than 30 years ago with roughly 100 people each month. Today, they help feed approximately 8,000 families.
When I asked about the shopping carts, she explained they weren’t simply handing out a few groceries. Their goal was to provide enough food to help feed a family for an entire week, including essentials such as eggs, meat, and other nutritious staples.
I left that conversation thinking less about the challenges people face—and more about the incredible people who quietly dedicate their lives to helping others.
Canada Has Challenges
There is no denying that life has become more expensive.
Housing affordability has become one of the biggest concerns facing Canadians. Grocery prices continue to rise while many wages have struggled to keep pace.
Many of the people waiting in line that morning were not unemployed.
They were the working poor.
These realities should concern all of us.
As Hamilton mortgage brokers, we see firsthand how difficult it has become for many families to purchase their first home or manage rising monthly expenses.
But Canada Is Still a Great Country
Despite these challenges, I believe Canada remains one of the best countries in the world.
We continue to enjoy many things that are easy to overlook:
- Political stability
- Opportunity to build a better future
- Strong communities that support one another
- Universal health care
- A peaceful and respectful society
- The freedom to pursue education, careers, and entrepreneurship
These are privileges that millions of people around the world still dream of.
A Reminder to Appreciate What We Have
My own children have worked hard to build their careers.
Like so many Canadian families, we’ve experienced both good times and difficult ones.
It’s easy to become frustrated by rising costs or negative headlines, but if we lose sight of what makes Canada special, we risk taking those advantages for granted.
The woman I met at the food bank reminded me that kindness and community remain some of Canada’s greatest strengths.
People helping people.
That’s something worth protecting.
Happy Canada Day
Canada isn’t perfect.
No country is.
But despite the challenges we face, I still believe we’re fortunate to call this country home.
As we celebrate Canada Day, I encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate the opportunities we have, support those who need a helping hand, and remember that small acts of kindness can make an enormous difference.
From all of us at Robert Floris & Sean Howard – Mortgage Architects, Happy Canada Day!
